Time for a modeshift™.

DPD has adopted a course which makes a valuable and responsible contribution to reducing CO2 emissions: the modeshift™ “from air to ground”. This modeshift™ by DPD fosters the conscious decision towards road transport: both economic and ecologic.

Even within Europe – and therefore mainly on short routes – lots of goods are transported by airplane. The climate-damaging pollutants which are produced by such flights can be reduced by up to eight times by using road transport instead. DPD’s highly efficient road network in Europe and its many direct routes make road transport an ecologic alternative which also pays off economically as it saves costs up to five times.

Why fly parcels?

Air freight is of course still an unrivalled mode of transport for urgent shipments such as relief supplies, high-value goods, spare parts, live animals and plants which need to be transported quickly and over long distances. DPD’s modeshift™ represents a reasonable option from an ecologic and economic point of view, particularly for goods which are less time-critical. With its product DPD CLASSIC, DPD is therefore offering a transport alternative which provides an increased level of environmental responsibility and can still claim to generate profits.

Save CO2 equiv.* emissions

Companies which ship their goods via road within Europe have a much lower carbon footprint. The ecologic argument is supported by an economic one. Air freight is relatively expensive in comparison to road transport. The increase in volumes transported by road also results in higher proportions of profitable direct shipments within the logistics industry. Trucks working to their full capacity enjoy a better balance when it comes to transportation costs and emissions. In comparison, airplanes produce up to eight times more CO2 equiv. as transportation of the goods over the same route by truck; and they are up to five times more expensive.

Time for modeshift™

If the transportation of goods within Europe is less urgent, there is hardly any barrier to transport by road. Transportation by truck generally takes one to two days longer. DPD’s highly efficient road network, its many direct routes and the large fleet of trucks guarantee swift transportation of goods, thereby producing significantly lower emissions. The switch from air express to DPD CLASSIC within Europe also saves customers money as they pay are paying up to five times less with this DPD product.

The ECO Calculator proves the modeshift™

The ECO Calculator by DPD shows how high the saving of so-called greenhouse gases can be when switching to the road. By entering a range of different parameters such as the starting location and destination, the number of parcels and frequency of shipment, it is possible to compare the levels of CO2 equiv.* saved from transportation of the goods via air freight and by road.

*CO₂ equiv. represents all greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted.
